I’m still not 100% clear on how they shot this thing, but I think they filmed strictly to capture the faces and composite them into full CG scenes. Because they weren’t happy with motion capture or 3D modeling the actors’ faces, said faces had to be lit and subjected to camera moves to match the eventual lighting & moves in the CG scene. Hence the wall of LEDs and the robot arm camera.
