The trailer for Spike Jonze and Charlie Kaufman‘s new film Adaptation is out. Let’s just hope lip-biting suckmaster Nick Cage doesn’t wreck it. (via kottke)

I have to admit — the trailer made me excited about this film. Despite Nic Cage x2, it looks fantastic. (And Chris Cooper is always understated and lovely.)

I wonder, though, if it’ll be as sad as Being John Malkovich, which was funny/quirky the first time I saw it (for the novelty/originality factor), but has made me cry from start to finish with every subsequent viewing….

I think the trailer is incredible. The song works perfectly, doesn’t it? First off I thought it was “Ice Ice Baby”, but of course it’s “Under Pressure” and that says something in the world of self-references and metafiction and pomo brickabrack.

Good point Sankey. I hadn’t even made the connection with that song and it’s multi-referentialed history. Yeah I guess the trailer looks good but to be honest if it wasn’t a Spike Jonze-Charlie Kaufman film I wouldn’t have been so intrigued. Moreover, I really have my reservations around Cage-o-matic. I want just as much as the next film-geek for Cage to be awesome and the film to rock. Cage is just so fucked now. Apparently he got married (to Lisa Marie Presley) on the day Elvis died… Apparently Cage has a very disturbing obsession with Elvis. Apprently he also doesn’t give a shit about acting or being human anymore. Anyway, I hope the film is good.

not to mention the nepotism — Cage and Spike are family now…. do you think that makes it harder to direct someone?

oh, and has anyone actually read “the orchid thief”? i’m curious to know if the book is any good…

Being John Malkovich made me cry too. Couldn’t they afford lighting or good film?

K, excellent summary…. I agree on both points.

And it was indeed as sad as Being John Malkovich.
